Magazines Cover info process - unfinished

I wanted my front cover to be as similar to red dead receptions theme as possible, this is my magazine without any additions of price issue masthead etc. this Is the first step or the design aspect of my magazine, I will include in final product a text box with an article of information, a bar code in the lower left or right, an issue number in the top right, a masthead behind the dominant image, and finally I will include my company name, which is yet to be created.
here is a comparison to an image I clearly had inspiration from, to make this very red dead themed, no part of the ps4 cover I used inspiration from was directly copied, I gathered internet sources and manually created the the images within my magazine cover. to see my internet sources please follow this link: https://joshfoundationmedia.blogspot.com/2018/12/emmas-magazine-project-with-pitch.html

Emma's Magazine Project (with Pitch)

Emma Magazine project

Location: I will be taking all photos within or around college, and maybe some from home, but it is likely that most images will be used from the internet, using google images, so things like asking permission to take a photo isn't necessary, but I will however provide links from images I have used at the bottom of this post.
Contribution: I may need assistance with photos being taken for example if i'm to be in a shot, however I won't need assistance with photoshop, however i'm likely to ask friends opinions on the layout of my magazine and what would make it look better.

Costs: I will not require any payments for this assignment due to me owning anything needed or required, my props are all at home and are able to be brought in once a camera is borrowed.
equipment: my main usage of equipment would be borrowing a camera from the college, to take various images until I find one that would best suit my magazine, I will also be using images from google, and when necessary I will provide links to the images; I need a laptop/Mac with photoshop as that will be what I use to edit my images, add titles etc.

magazine research/questionnaire:

I asked 4 people to take my questionnaire and here are my results below the coloured dots indicate who chose what.

Magazine Pitch:
initial idea:
My Magazine will include various gaming facts and statistics, all whilst following one particular game as the main source of information, so essentially gaming facts all bundled into one magazine with the focus on a particular game, which is likely to be red dead redemption 2, as i'm really enjoying this game, so I feel like making my magazine about this particular game would make it a better magazine as im passionate about the game so I will enjoy making this, not only that, the game is recently out, and its already breaking many records, and currently winning many awards, so its highly likely that choosing this game would likely make people more inclined to read the magazine, also its practically a new game, so this makes it new news as-well  and people may want to know more.
target audience:
I aim to make the magazine for all ages, unfortunately the games age rating is 18+ however that doesn't stop kids and teens from playing the game as its simply a warning, so with that in mind I will aim to make my magazine readable and not too complex so it appeals to a younger demographic, regardless this magazine is aimed more towards people in there twenties but I will try to accommodate for those who are allowed to play the game underaged.
Article Example: Red Dead 2's opening week of physical sales is more than double its first game that released back in 2010 the latest figures show in the UK alone, these statistics only include hard copies alone, and as your aware digital downloads are usually more popular and currently on the rise, so with that in mind its hard to comprehend the amount of sales already, despite its very strong start it didn't beat fifa's sales however it managed to beat black ops 4.
Final information:
My magazine will release every 2 months with the focus on a specific game which differs within each magazine released, so this month is red dead redemption 2, however in another two months it will be prioritising a different game, but because the focus is on red dead redemption I will use its art accordingly on the cover, whilst showcasing what magazine this is so people know its a bi monthly magazine, and due to its no frequent release I don't plan on making this a cheap purchase, I want my magazine to be roughly £6.99 I feel this is fair as originally stated it doesn't come out weekly so you could technically save up for it within 2 months.

Neil Essay Pre Production

Pre Production

What is pre production:

work done on a product, especially a film or broadcast programme, before full-scale production begins. Eg planning and deciding how the final product will look and what is required/necessary to get it to that point/standard.

Financing:

Financing is essential to film making as it keeps an overall plan of what can be put into where, it is usually likely the higher budget of the film the better quality film will be produced, the budget is likely one of the most important aspects of film making, because with out money, that prevents you affording the essentials to making a film, and If the financing isn’t done correctly it could really make parts of the film terrible, for example if a specific job is very minimally financed for example lighting, it would have a bad effect on the film.

How do films get financed:

Directors will often meet people who are likely to be interested in backing the project by producing a pitch or something similar to hopefully interest the possible donator to invest money and hopefully to persuade them that the input of money is an investment and there prophet will be increased due to sales and popularity of the film, as every investor gets a percentage.

commonly filmmakers or directors  get loans or grants from the government. Being a uk film maker the British Film Institute is the company you would likely go with in processing a loan or a grant. Not only do the fund films, they have the worlds largest film archive, they provide many film festivals with money and they have their own academy in which allows people to make there own ideas into reality with there own film ideas. Unfortunately for new film makers its a very large risk, as money isn’t guaranteed to come back from the film, and the film in general may be a flop, and without a comfortable budget it could potentially ruin some ones life if they where to make there first film with loans and investments for it to be a failure, because not only will the film maker not earn money but the money would have to be owed to the investors leaving them in debt, although if the film is successful the prophet of a successful film is usually well over the original films budget, sort of a high risk high reward situation.

Another way in which films can get financed is through sponsorships, this could often benefit the company sponsoring if the film is successful, for example during screen Time a sponsors product would be used and particularly in a good way making the product look good, making people subconsciously want to buy said product, so a sponsorship is essentially good business and an advert almost, however this is all based on the film being good, otherwise its just glorifying a product in a bad film which makes the product sponsorship seemingly useless.

Auditions:

An audition is to hopefully cast someone right for a role, actors/actresses come into an audition and usually are given a segment of the script to read, and act it out as best as they can, this process is often done after pre production as you need an overall outline on what your character will be/look like, in an audition, they don’t just look for best actor/actress they also try to match characteristic they feel would suit the character best, for example appearance, height, hair and ethnicity are often the key factors in people getting a certain role however, how well they act also comes into the equation, often directors will put out a brief of what the actor must look like to fit the role, then it narrows down the process of finding some one, and then in that instance it would be there preferred actor/actress.

Location Scouting:

A location scout is very essential when planning a film, many things are required when scouting out a location, and if research and looking at locations isn’t done it could essentially cause either legal problems or an overall risk of danger, when scouting a location you must gather information as well as looking for a suitable place, is the area safe to film, are there many people, can every one arrive to said location, time of day etc, a really big issue is getting permissions to film in specific locations sometimes its required to seek permission from the land owner, however in a public place you a required to ask anyone in any scenes permission that there face is in the film, if not the scene would have to be re shot or the person edited out, which would cost the production of the film time and Money, so with location scouting this can be prevented by gathering data for when the area is busiest and possibly looking into closing a particular area off to prevent people from entering the scenes, however this can be very expensive to achieve

Recce:

A recce focuses on showing the hazards a location has, a recce is also used not to just displaying possible issues, but solving them too. Used to underline any problems that may occur whilst on set or in a set location for example, if a room is filled with electrical equipment it would be advised not to bring any beverages near the set or in the particular place the recce notifies you about.

A shooting schedule is used to save and use time efficiently, a plan to easily remain organised and have a plan if anything is going to occur, basically something agreed upon by the entire film crew and they have to stick to the schedule this would prevent re visiting the same place to shoot different scenes when in reality you can do all scenes in one visitation, so a schedule is really a good idea if you want to maximise your time on the film and making sure its the best possible, because more time means, you can make the film better overall. Back to the point of why its so important, it is very helpful to have a schedule so people are available for the set day, along with that

Shot list:

Shot lists are ideal at portraying exactly how the shot will look, and who or what will be in the shot, it goes very in depth as it has many names of shots which all present in a different way and are classic film techniques at making something look a certain way, for example the high angle could be used to make someone seem bigger/smaller depending on who is infant of the camera and who is behind, this can be used as a first person technique to make the character appear bigger, or have a higher importance, shot lists are needed as it is clear instruction for the film crew and they know exactly what the director is looking for in the scene, this would also reduce the amount of takes required as its more of a step by step process.

Storyboard:

Storyboarding is the best way to visualise how a scene will look, it analysis each scene step by step with crude images depicting a basic version which shot-lists camera angles and the overall direction the scene will take, the sounds and other minor details even up to clothing and specific characters in the scene, as stated, these are usually drawn rough sketches but there is cases where people create the images in photo shop or other editing softwares, which in a sense would make the visual representation better and easier to visualise The producer could also use storyboards to identify the scenes which will need effects/ certain lighting eg: sepia for a flashback scene, it can also help show how many extras you'll need for a scene for filling up a room or town Etc. Storyboards can also be used as a taster for people who might want to sponsor or invest in the film project.

Script:

The script is the base foundation of any pre production, it is the rope that ties all other aspects of pre production together, if you don’t have a script you almost can’t plan, you need to have a script for the shot-list, the storyboard, location scouting Etc. Regardless of the importance of the script it is also key to realise a bad script is likely going to create a bad film, writing takes time and isn’t easy, also if the writing is bad, its less likely that actors will perform as well, nor would they be as inclined to take up a role, which could make sponsors and donors also not want to provide money if they know the film is likely to be a failure.

Film genre comparisons and analysis

Film Genre Comparisons:

For this project i will be analyzing the horror genre and its codes and conventions, whilst also analysing the films as a whole whilst comparing them, the films i will be analyzing are women in black and would you rather; i specifically chose these 2 films as they both fit into the criteria of horror, however each film is completely different in the execution of horror, would you rather being more graphic and violent, leaving nothing to the imagination, where as women in black is more paranormal and the fear of the unknown.

according to Steve Neale genres are instances of repetition and difference, The women in black follows a man exploring an abandoned house which is said to be paranormal/cursed, but would you rather is following a women in need to earn money, with the actual threat of 'the game' and being killed during the process. We see Neale's theory in motion as they're both the same genre but are different in their own special way with the codes and conventions.

The genre of horror has ancient origins with roots in folklore and religious traditions, focusing on death, the afterlife, evil, the demonic and the principle of the thing embodied in the person. These were manifested in stories of beings such as witches, vampires, werewolves and ghosts. European horror fiction became established through works by the Ancient Greece and ancient romans.Women in black suspense clip:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od_XDxlOlUw

in this scene we can see, that Daniel Radcliffe is slowly walking into the other room with an axe drawn and ready for him to defend himself, this is shot in a very classic horror genre style, with spooky, and suspenseful eerie chords, and music gradually building up, which you may not even notice, but you are subconsciously aware which can cause stress expecting the character to be attacked; following a slow pace, to increase the tension and suspense, asking the question, what is behind that door? in this specific scene, if you where to subtract the music and sound effects it would possibly change the entire scenes tone, with this type of film and its genre, this film isn't reliant on gore, dismemberment or overall something that shocks you, it is however heavily reliant on build up, sudden jump scares, the inability to be expecting whats coming, which is why im comparing the films as the both fit in the description of horror,  even though they are completely different in there deliver of said 'horror' in this scene and the whole film women in black, it follows this pattern; comparing this to would you rather leaves the obvious answer of the difference as already explained what women in black doesn't include would you rather does, for example you are aware of the threat, a deranged man wanting to play a sadistic game, but in women in black, the title is the only thing to go by, and that of the vague descriptions Daniel Radcliffe is told about before entering the haunted home, the thing about would you rather though is I personally believe it is more menacing to face something head on, rather than not being exactly sure what your facing, despite my opinion other may think differently, something the films both have in common, is the inability to be in control, Would you rather puts the captives in restraints and threatened at gun point, one attempt of escape lead to a member of the group being shot, in women in black, Daniel Radcliffe's doesn't know how he can't prevent this entity, all he can do is essentially try to survive, and find out why.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fbTP5MjhH0

in this scene we can compare the difference from women in blacks scene, even though both films portray the horror of whats to come would you rather immiediatly reveals what the element of horror is, in the scene we know straight away each person is given a choice of who shocks who, but in women in black is more mind games, and trickery which confuses the viewer, usually leaving the mystery to the imagination, which is how these films differ as woud you rather is very in your face with what is happening and how the plot is likely to follow, it is even obvious from the start that something about this some what 'innocent' game would follow something sinister and sisturbing, along with that would you rather is very graphic and leaves almost nothing to the imagination, for example some one is forced to explode there hand, and is shown on camera, although, there are a few dark scenes in women in black like the poison drinking scene it doesnt compare to the obcenitys of would you rather.

Summary for horror - it could be said that they are both equally scary however for different reasons, so in a summary, the films whilst being in the same genre of horror and follow a similar plot (unnecessary death unfolding at the end) the films still remain different due to the style of the film, one being imensly graphic, and the other following a haunted house which provides jumpscares and less graphic scenes, one showing the fear of the unknown, and the other showing the fear of what is to come.

next i will be analyzing action and its codes and conventions, I will comparing charles bronsen and hancock as my two seperate action films, I will talk about the similarities and differences used within these 2 particular action films.

Action film is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases. Action films tend to feature a resourceful hero struggling against incredible odds, which include life-threatening situations, a villain, or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero (though a small number of films in this genre have ended in victory for the villain instead). Advancements in CGI have made it cheaper and easier to create action sequences and other visual effects that required the efforts of professional stunt crews in the past. However, reactions to action films containing significant amounts of CGI have been mixed, as films that use computer animations to create unrealistic, highly unbelievable events are often met with criticism. While action has long been a recurring component in films, the "action film" genre began to develop in the 1970s along with the increase of stunts and special effects. Common action scenes in films are generally, but not limited to, car chases, fighting and gunplay or shootouts.  This genre is closely associated with the thriller and adventure genres, and they may also contain elements of spy fiction.  an action film is usually heavily reliant on fight scenes, effects, and a moderately gripping storyline, usually car chases hand to hand-fights or an all out war occur in action films all seemingly done in really unrealistically very entertaining ways, a good example would be fast and furious,  Bronsen, A criminal sent to prison for a petty crime, however staying in said prison for many, many more years than his set release due to bad behaviour (constant fights), a very aggressive man, who seems particularly unhinged played by tom hardy, fighting is his overall goal, to be famous, to be the best, no matter what it takes.  Hancock follows a regular man at a first glance, however we soon learn this man posses great abilities, the ability to fly, deflect bullets and has extreme strength, he is also a drunk, described as a waste, and homeless, he isn't exactly a generic super hero, usually saving the day often causes severe property damage.  going back to the point of Steve Neale genres are instances of repetition and difference these 2 films also follow a similar plot, a man wanting to improve himself, hancocks instance is to be a better hero, where as bronsen wants to be the best fighter, each man practice and train throughout the film, however the huge difference is one man is good and the other is bad, although talking about bronsen being bad, is quite strange when we watch the film we want him to win the fights and do well regardless of what or who he is, regardless of him being a bad guy, we want him to succeed, regardless if him succeeding has a positive or negative outcome for others, but in hancocks situation we want him to succeed for the right reasons as he is doing wrong but trying to do right which is what the films do differently, both films by being in the action genre obviously include fight scenes however bronsen's are clearly done in what seems to be in less of a budget but it matches the style of the film, but if Hancock fought like that in his films it would be laughable and almost boring, as the scene is set for him to have all these powers and fights like a regular man, it wouldn't be interesting, and would essentially put people off  the ending of both films are completely different, bronsen being the bad guy isn't let off and is kept in prison almost left on a cliff hanger of what is happening next and is almost open to interpretation, where as in Hancock he is a changed man, and goes to live a quiet life with his wife, who he discovered he had been married to for thousands of years, which causes his powers to deplete but he wanted to live a good life§e, so we can see how the endings differ and not every single action film does end happy.  in conclusion Most films being in the same category follow a similar pattern, whilst usually being different in the context of the character, and what they do in the film, but the plot usually as a whole ends the same so overall i have learned how to analyse films i have watched and compare them from other films, however i find this a hard task still.

Magazine Analysis Project

I have been assigned the task of analysing a magazine, i chose a gaming magazine, as this interests me and i feel like it will help e with the project; i will be analysing the magazine in what it does effectively to entice some one into picking it up and making people aware of what the topic of the magazine is about, i will be looking at codes and conventions, mise en scene etcetera.
The lack of colour variety is a subtle hint to the magazine having a darker setting/theme could be an underlining indication the magazine isn't suitable for all audiences; however the magazine uses the colour orange to reveal the important points and it stands out to the rest of the magazine. the main image is Joel, which a lot of people would know at a glance as he is a very well known iconic character who is essentially one of play-stations mascots so this would defiantly entice the viewer into reading, and also from my stand point i saw this magazine due to his face being there. i know this due to the last of us having really successful statistics as 17 million copies where sold, and it being so successful on last generation, was later remastered to ps4, then again to ps4 pro, the orange not only stands out against the magazine but we can see there is also a white font; the point of this being, the orange writing on the front is to show that they are the important factors of the magazine. The Masthead is clearly visible whilst also keeping the main image in focus, it draws in the audience, to some one who is a fan of edge, whilst also being easy on the eyes, its not difficult to see, which allows for some one passing by to easily and clearly distinguish what the magazine is saying, as some covers/magazines have strange color schemes which are often very difficult to read, a color that comes to mind is yellow, however i would of also said orange, however it is used very affectively on this magazine cover. Another minor point which is appealing that subtly makes the magazine look better is how some of the text follows the dominant image whilst following a specific distance from the image, although this isn't anything detailed, its just a nice touch to the magazine that i noticed and thought looked very affective.

I want to make a point about the lighting and the positioning of it on Joel's Face, the technique used looks so effective, the left side of his faced is heavily in shadow which allows for the font to overlay his face and is easily visible, not only does the shadow create a sense of mystery or perhaps a darker side, we also see a really macro close up of Joel, which shows a withered man, essentially showing his weaknesses, and emphasizing he is a vulnerable man.

The main cover line 'the last of us' is also a good indication to what the magazines key focus will be on, this could be for people who are interested in the game but are not aware of the character; which technically could increase the amount of people who would read the magazine,  also adding to this underneath it explains it is from the creators of uncharted, which had received game of the year and was incredibly popular which defiantly would improve the popularity of the last of us due to the success of there other franchise, this could also be referred back to the color scheme as the uncharted point is in orange which signifies the importance of that bit of information, and it is likely one of the first things that people would read on the cover after noticing the image and the title.

codes and conventions: The magazine goes along with most magazines codes and conventions as the dominant image takes up the majority of the cover, is incredibly eye catching to someone a fan of the game, also the image is looking directly at the audience which creates a personal connection, he is looking subtly lost and afraid, the masthead is also following the codes and conventions as it is at the top of the magazine, just like most magazines as well. The magazine also contains an issue number, however unlike most magazines there is no barcode, so I assume it is on the back instead of the front.

Advantages of Digital magazine -

The digital magazine is ideal for some one who requires ease of access, no matter where you are you only need minimum requirements to view a digital magazine, wifi is needed mostly but sometimes thats not even required as it can be downloaded; meaning you may never loose it, as it can be backed up and stored internally on a computer, which means it can also be forwarded and shared without buying a copy, which wouldn't be an issue anyway as digital magazines are often cheaper, or free all together. A digital magazine is also really good for the fact that no damage can come to it, it isn't something that needs to be cared for, or delicate with whilst reading its a simple swipe to view the next page, with no worry of tearing or damaging it as its not physically there, which could be a advantage/disadvantage depending on the person as some people like a copy in hand as it could be
 classed as an experience.

Image result for gaming magazinesThis is a Magazine For Gamers, this is clearly displayed by the masthead PC GAMER, not only is this in bold and clearly stands out But i feel that it isn't the most important part of information on the magazine, and they subtly do this by overlapping the power armor and the metal chain behind it, to signify the importance of the power armor and a indication that this game/object is more important than the magazine itself. The power armor itself is hugely significant and iconic to the fallout Franchise, it is widely known to associate with the game so this image alone, would allow gamers to know if a fan of the franchise they know what the magazine is about. in the background we can see a grungy makeshift work station, however it is slightly blurred to keep the main focus on the power armor, but from what we can see in the background we can make out that fallout is a gritty game; adding to this we can see a very minimal color palette in the background, which links to the game as everything was destroyed from a nuclear bombing, so this fits nicely.

For people who are not familiar with the franchise underneath the power armor is Fallout 4, not only is it really affective in its positioning, allows it to be read whilst keeping other more important things/captions the main focus; but its also good as it uses fallouts actual font so it could give a form of nostalgia, and the font also keeps up with the theme of the game, whats interesting with this magazine it has a few sub images so if fallout wasn't the interest in the reader another popular game would hopefully entice some one and hopefully people are likely to read it for that instead, as overwatch is very popular, along with an advertisement for gaming mice.

Something strange about this magazine is that they use 2 separate colors to emphasize an important point on the magazine, they use red and orange, but in a sense its used effectively as it adds diversity and doesn't make the magazine cover boring as i stated earlier the color scheme is slightly bland so it could work in the covers favor to use red and orange for the colors to point out the important things

Advantages of a print magazine -

the advantages of a print magazines are as follows: a print magazine is in hand, and is a 'experience' people enjoy going to the store buying a magazine and later reading it, as its in hand and not digital more pride could be taken in the magazine, looked after better, and more likely to be completely read instead of skimming through, also a print copy is likely to contain better quality images, since they are often printed to a good quality where as a digital copy is usually a lower quality look. These are some of the reasons why people would prefer it, but from a beneficial stand point it personally say that a digital magazine is more convenient then that of a print magazine.
Image result for magazine gaming double page spreads

in this double page spread it is talking about the really successfully call of duty black op franchise with the focus on zombies on the right page, what we can see straight away is the magazine has gone for a dark colour scheme, this could be symbolic to the game being immensely dark and scary during the zombie maps, and also linking to the main campaign as it is also showing a dark time/theme where war is present. the colour scheme of the font is also very fitting to the game, as the title of a black ops is orange and white, and they have successfully captured that in the magazines double page spread, by making the important parts orange, where as in the game the part that is orange would be the number in the franchise in this instance it is black ops 2, so from that we can see the orange parts, although minimal are very effective at differentiating from the rest of the text, as a form of a quote or the Drop cap at the begging of the text, this is also common design element used in magazine double page spreads to signify the beginning of the text.

in the images we can nothing bright, it is all dull, this fits into the theme they where going for, in the image of the zombies we can see a destroyed town in the background, this gives the reader a taste of what is in the game; the use of many images is really good because it can prevent the reader from getting bored and splits up the text, which is what they have done, per photo, they have only included a small paragraph, where as if the images weren't present it would look very bland and may put people off from reading it.

Game Of Thrones Review - Gilly

Game of thrones review

At first I was incredibly sceptical I wasn’t interested in the show, I thought it seemed like they would heavily rely on good effects and lack a good story, but in my honest opinion I couldn’t of been more wrong.

Starting out in the first series we are show a family from the north (the Starks) and you realise straight away the focus is to be on ned stark - the father struggling to decide what what outcome is best for his family giving him some rather uncomfortable situations with rob Baratheon his once close friend - the king; who has complications between his wife, and ‘son’ Joffrey, which, inevitably leads towards the ‘death’ of rob then soon after the beheading of Ned.

The first season was an eye opener of what was to come, it was so unexpected, for many Ned would be classed as the main protagonist of the first season and for him to be killed off so early on meant no character was safe, which left a truly gripping story atmosphere.

I like the whole series as it really makes you like characters and you feel almost attached, and a death of a favourable character is truly a sad experience, they build up the characters in a way that even the people who are bad in the show are liked which really shows the writers put a lot of thought into character development and how it would affect the story, the show is also balanced with a good amount of effect, including the mesmerising dragon scenes or the entire city getting obliterated by wild fire, not to mention the incredibly well made battle scenes.

The show switches from the focus of ned to the focus of the different houses and there attempts to rise to power, I like the sense of not knowing who will be in the episode as theres so many characters in different places so its hard to follow the perspective of every main character, so you almost anticipate end get exited to follow your favourite character and it builds up the suspense by leaving it for an episode or 2.

To summarise my overall opinion I would without a doubt rate the entire series very highly, however some specific parts of dialogue is quite confusing which can lead you to not understand the plot for the rest of the episode, however in a sense that encourages you to ask and communicate about it, which can be quite entertaining for you and your friends.
